88 760 turbo. finding top dead centre ( Firing)

Post by rmcmighty »

I am not quite sure about finding top dead center on the firing stroke .
If all my timing marks line up where they are supposed to when preparing to change the timing belt is there a chance that i have TDC on the exhaust stroke ? or will all the timing marks only line up on the Firing stroke ?

Please help !

As long as the marks are lined up you should be OK. However, I always check that #1 is in firing position by removing the spark plug, putting a long probe (plastic knitting needle in my case) into the plug hole and turning the engine by hand until the needle comes up to its highest point and the marks are aligned.

It isn't necessary but is a way of being sure.
