Oil coming out of filler cap -1993 Volvo 850 GLT (Non turbo)

Post by Searchguru »

Hi,
I'm new to both Volvos and forums so I hope you can help.
I have a bit of mechanical knowledge but I'm no mechanic. I have done a bit of investigation into this problem via the internet and your pages but I got confused.
Oil started appearing over the top of the cylinder head and at first I thougt the breather pipe was split. Having taken the cover off the head I could see pools of oil in all the castings but no apparent split. I cleaned it all up but it happened again and then I noticed that oil was also coming out of the dipstick. I looked to where the breather went but it disappeared out of view down the front of the engine. I have seen mention of PCV etc and have seen a diagram of the vessel into which the breather goes.
My questions are:
1. What needs to come off to get to the part the breather pipe attaches to or is it accessible from under the car?
2. Can it be cleaned out or does it need to be replaced etc?
3. What other parts might I need?
I have a Volvo dealer a few miles away so can buy bits from there unless you know better! Cheaper would be better.

The oil filler cap alone could be explained by a hardened rubber seal, which has to be replaced every 20-30K miles on these cars. However, the leak thru the dispstick shows that you apparently have a clogged PCV.

In order to replace it, the intake manifold will have to come out. Cleaning the system is not the way to go as all the associated piping and vacumm lines get very brittle with age I do not know if your car has a EGR valve.

If it does, it will have to be throughly cleaned also.

You will find the parts at www.fcpgroton.com and eeuroparts.com at much better prices that dealer.

In order to remove the intake manifold, I advise you to consider removing the cooling fan at the radiator. That is simple and will give you easier access to two very difficult to reach bolts under the intake manifold- one holdind the dipstick an another one holding the manifold to a bracket attached to the block.
This job will take about 8 hours depending on your practice and tools.

You will find very detailed instructions on the repair databases.

Good luck.

A word of warning for UK members. If you buy parts in the US and exceed the lower limit for imports you will pay import duty, VAT and a Royal Mail handling charge. The last time I checked the limit was just over

Bill,

It sounds like it is time to fire up your soldering iron. Does Victor offer a franchise?

Lee,

It's a good thought but I am retired - or should that be tired?

We have at least two companies in the UK that do this repair but I have not heard of any recommendations for them. Victor seems to be the universal king in this field.

I shall have to compare prices, work out VAT and Royal Mail handling charge to see if it is still cheaper to send the unit across the pond. I would prefer it in the hands of one who is well recommended.

Now for an amendment to my warning for UK members:- Import duty is charged on any item valued at more than

Thank you JRL but it still leaves me with the extras I have to pay at this end.

If you find a good, inexpensive repairer over here let us know.

Hi,
It took me about 5 hours to do, over a couple of days, but I think I could do it in half that time now that I've done it.
I spoke to the mechanic at my nearest Volvo dealer and he said that most parts will clean up in a petrol bath, as that is what they do (interesting to see what they charge for!). This proved the case for every part except the hard plastic beather pipe which just fell to bits (about
