'94 960 will not fire

Post by waxk »

You know you've got problems when the mechanic shrugs his shoulders. My 1994 960 with 156,000 has benn running perfect until this morning when it cranked but would not start. The timing belt is perfect, it has tons of spark and fuel, but when he ran a compression sheck, the best was 85 and the average of the others was 50. This makes no sense as the car has been running great, and using or burning no oil whatsoever. The mechanic seems confused by this, as am I. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Bob

Although you say the timing belt is perfect I would have it rechecked. To me it sounds like the timing belt has skipped a tooth or two

The electrical contacts are notorious in no start situations, if you already havn't doe so, cleen all the conections (every one!) :
sensors, relays, and the most elusive one is the big plug mounted on the driver side wheel well (the one under the black plastic cover). Make sure the snesor plugs, female sides arn't pushed back or have oxidation on them. Well worth the time to inspect each one thoroghly. Also inspect any wiring behind the engine at the tight space near the firewall. Make sure the wires have good insulation.

The best manual for this is TP2305201 Fault Tracing, Repair and Maintenance for 960 available from www.volvotechinfo.com it's well worth it to find all kinds of electricle gremlins no other manual is this detailed when it comes to the motortronic 1.8 ECU system.

Ofcoure not to put down this forum as all forums are of value, but brickboard.com has the most amout of 960 related issues with a wealth of info available nowhere else. having said that I vist all forums for colective input from as many as I can.

Good luck!
