Alternator Rebuild - 850Turbo

Hi everyone and thanks for all the great information and tips.

I've got a 96 850 Turbo and only get about 12.5 - 12.8 volts out of my alternator and am wondering if anyone has rebuilt a Volvo alternator before, and where to get the parts.

Many times just replacing the brushes can breathe new life into an old alternator, and I've done this before on other cars in just a few minutes.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I can't see any reason why you can't replace the brushes as on any other alternator. I, too, have rebuilt many in the past and have found new brushes to be adequate for a lot of miles. However, I also check the slip rings and renew as necessary.

Alternator went on my 850 Tdi last month. A company reconditioned the alternator for $180 here in the UK. Car has done 387,000 miles, and 3500 miles since the rebuild on the alternator. So answer is yes they can be repaired quite cheaply.

Ive seen a website that describes the procedure, but I think you need pullers to extract the bearings.
