1999 AWD S70-Front U joint on Drive Shaft

Post by Kansas Jayhawk »

This is on a 1999 AWD S70 2.4 Turbo with 115,000 miles. We have removed the propeller shaft on this car because it was making a lot of noise. The Volvo dealer checked with Volvo before they removed the shaft and Volvo said no problem so the car is now a 2 wd.

I am replacing the front U joint on the propeller shaft assembly, (wore out and dried grease), and am trying to get the old U joint off the shaft.
I have the U joing apart but how does the shaft come off the U joint. It
looks like it will just slip out but how much effort does this take?
Maybe I am doing something wrong or does it take a puller? Any ideas? The part number on the front half of the shaft is 9183941-00. I can purchase the new U joint kit for around $240 instead of $1200 for a whole new shaft. The car is running fine now but the AWD is much better in snow and handling.

Any suggestions would be appriciated.

I'm down at the cabin at the moment so I don't have VADIS to consult.

Are there small holes in the side of the yoke?

On my Suburban the U-joints were glued in from the factory. The removal method is to heat them with a propane torch until the glue squirts out of the holes. At that point they pressed out and the new joints came with cir-clips to hold them in place.

This is exactly my current problem. Was this resolved. If you take out the propeller shaft and make it 2WD, is it hard to get it back to AWD?

To restore the car back to AWD, you only need to replace the driveshaft to the rear wheels if you need it. It will drive just fine as FWD for the time being.

Call Colorado Driveshaft. They have helped me before. Once with a front cv joint and another time with a rebuilt driveshaft. Good guys.
