Improving Turbo MPG (winter)
Improving Turbo MPG (winter)
I think it should be possible to improve overall MPG when the air temperature is below say 60F by simply bypassing the intercooler. At 10F, plus the cooling effect of the intercooler the computer doesn't seem able to give an optimum fuel-air mix. Or the combustion chamber volume is too big to handle that amount of oxygen. So I say, we are able enough to regulate a bypass, to achieve an optimum air induction temperature, and thus better MPG. Is anyone on board with me?

I hear you....but not sure if it would truly make much of a difference. My thinking is that once the air is cool enough the intercooler isn't really going to change the temperature of the air being forced through it much anyway. Build a prototype and let us know what you find. A way to measure before and after intercooler temperatures would be a good start.

BIGGER intercooler, BETTER fuel mileage.
What you're asking is weird, wouldn't work, you would get WORSE mileage and is generally a very odd question.
I have(on my R) a bigger (HUGE) FMIC, cold air intake, different ECU program and my net result (in daily, not hard driving), is that I get 1 MPG better mileage than I did when stock.
Also have a DP and an exhaust. All these aftermarket parts make it freer flowing so the mileage is better, not worse

There you go....the guy who knows these (P2) models inside and out has spoken....really. Listen to him, he knows what he's talking about. So, to summarize, it ain't worth it and will end up being a waste of $$ and your time.

Here is another take on upping the MPG in winter. An 850T develops 222hp at the standard temp of 59 degrees F. We all know when its very cold out, the car flies like it has 260 hp. Because it probably does! And at very hot temps, the opposite is true. All else being equal. Now any buggy with 260hp gets worse MPG than the same one that has 180hp. So logically just by slipping a rubber mat down in front of the intercooler at below 45 degrees F, to stop the cooling effect, will start to improve gas mileage. And if the first radiator is the intercooler then cover up only 70% of it. A cubic yard of cold air has more oxygen than a cubic yard of hot air. Yes, I would be comfortable with this $5 modification, and it would get much better results than, the gizmos they sell on late night TV.
