81' 260 (240) GL...Inconsistant starting
I'm at a loss. The problem started a few weeks ago after NEVER giving me even the slighters problem. All of a sudden...on occasion it would not start up upon turning the key. It's getting spark...the starter is engaging strong as ever. It just seems as if it isn't getting any fuel to the engine. I figured it might be a fuel filter problem. I recently used some fule line cleaner/octane booster (seafoam) and guess that sediments have been knocked loose in the fuel tank...this could've clogged the origional fuel filter(yes...it was the origional) I didn't want to throw down the $30 dollars for a true Volvo fuel filter so i attatched a generic filter until i felt the sediments were no longer a problem. About 30% of the time the engine will not start...if i'm not in a hurry i'll wait a few minutes turn the key and it'll fire right up. I've noticed that if i pop the hood and shake the filter while also squeezing the fuel lines it'll fire right up...though at times that aint working. Luckily i live in a town of many hills and can always "pop start" the girl. I'm now on my second filter..please help.
I try to do it myself...i try.

Please search this forum for my posts on fuel pumps. I suspect your 240, like my 740, uses the two-pump fuel system, one in-tank and one downstream. Next time it fails to start, lightly tap the main fuel pump (not the in-tank pump) with a blunt object. If it starts right away after that, then its time for TWO new fuel pumps and a new in-tank filter sock. Let me know if you have questions.
