Doesn't keep a spark going / 85 /240dl

Post by imaraiza »

I'm new to this forum but would appreciate any assistance troubleshooting this issue. I have a 1985 240 DL. A few days ago, the car came to a complete stop. To my investigation, I found that the spark plug cable from the cap to the coil had severed. Having replaced that, It seems that the engine will turn but won't stay running.

I've replaced the dist. cap, spark plug cables, ignition coil, fuel filter (to make sure), battery and battery cables and it still won't stay running. I've since taken it to a local mechanic and he was unsuccessful at getting it running as well. Any help or suggestions would be great.
Thanks - 240DL

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

You seem to have replaced most of the easy to see parts that can cause a spark failure. When you had the distributor cap off did you check the rotor arm for burning?

Are you getting battery voltage at the coil primary circuit? If this is low it will cause problems.

These are general suggestions which can be fine tuned if you can tell me the type of system is fitted to the car - Bosch LH Jetronic or Volvo/Chrysler Hall effect.

How so I confirm tha it's not a fuel relay
