Strut mounts???

Post by maxrx8 »

Is it normal to have the strut mounts replaced within 60,000 miles on a 98 S70T5?
Story:

The CEL light is on. The wife went to the dealer to have it checked out. Charged 85 to turn it off :x and then said hey your strut mounts need replacing.

Within the last year we have had the engine mounts replace. I don't know why. Top once and then the others the next time.

My wife loves the car, but is this a problem with these?
I've owned a few cars in my life and have never had to replace a motor mount or for that case a strut mount.

Please clue me in.

On my 94 GLT I had the engine mount replaced in warranty - I was the primary driver and drove the car to its limit. The mechanic that replaced the mounts told me to take it easy on the accelerator, romping on the gas caused the engine to snap and rock on the mounts causing pre-mature wearing of the engine mounts and it wouldn't be too long before the suspension would need replacing. My wife started driving the car soon after (with a much softer touch) and there were no wear problems. The car lasted till late 96 when it was t-boned and replaced with a 96 850 standard.

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).

The top engine mount to the firewall is notorious for failure. The IPD replacement is great. Top strut mounts routinely fail about 70k, you will know by the clunk noise on bumps. There are little linkages on the front that also fail. My factory shocks were toast at 70K as well. Bilsteins are a big improvement.
