Turbo Booster

Post by Han »

I have installed the manual turbo booster for my 850 T5 Turbo.

Currently it is standing at .7 bar. I'm planning to push it to 1.0 bar. Anyone knows the maximum boost a standard 850 T5 engine and standard gearbox can endure? Wouldnt want to break the engine and the gearbox

Someone PLEASE advise.

It should go 15 PSI. That's what mine does and sometimes it spikes to 17.
FYI 1.0 Bar is 14.50377 PSI. Make sure you've done Stage-0 or else you'll be blowing off rubber hoses and the little stuff that wasn't done to get your car up to par will start rearing their ugly ittle heads.

Stage-0 really means no new mods, just everything up to spec...like the car is new, no codes, PCV is renewed, etc.. Some people add silicone turbo hoses to the stage-0 maintenance.

I see...

Well...seeming that modding Volvo's locally is kinda expensive.

I'm now experimenting an open filter system. Changed the box filter to a cone filter. What are the setbacks for that?

When you say, what are the setbacks, do you mean cost or do you mean what would you end up "paying" in terms of new codes, etc. for modding it this way?

To be honest, the whole point of stage-0 is that if you have issues with your car before modding it with chips, turbo boost gauge, catback, new or different exhaust, etc., then your "troubles" get multiplied to the "n-th" degree. The idea is to have a good, stable running, problem-free car to begin with before you begin mods like a boost gauge or anything else. The "setback" of an open air filter intake or filter system is negligible if done right to a stable Volvo. Cost? Well, that all depends on if you fab it yourself or buy something that's already out there.

Setbacks as in the side effects of it. But you've basically answered it ;) thanks!

Yea the open filter was manually fabricated. So far the car runs well. Better performance as well.

Mind I ask what have you done to your car? and which model is yours?

Hey Han,
My mods are basically in my signature. I found that my airbox is sufficient and so I have not done anything to it except to use a K&N drop-in filter. I also have not done the downpipe or catback. Although I will if my CAT or exhaust ever needs replacing as non-OEM is better and actually cheaper. I did silicone hoses (vacuum and turbo) and upgraded my ECU with IPD's. I get right at 15psi boost and some spiking to 17 without a boost control. Other than this I've done the upper strut mount bar and IPD swaybars with heavy duty endlinks. I've also changed out all of my struts/shocks spring seats and strut/shock mounts...I went with Bilstein Touring (TC's) and have upgraded tires to "V" rated Bridgeston Turanza LS series (no longer offered in my 205-55-16 size :( ) with original Perfo wheels. Oh and I have a full size Perfo in my trunk and took out the donut spare. Other than that, I use Mobil-1 synthetic oil and ATF. Brakes are drilled and slotted with OEM Volvo brake pads and I use ATE Super Blue brake fluid. My brakes work well and don't wear any faster than stock. I have a boost gauge on my A-pillar (a must if you do any turbo upgrades) and also some interior mods: wood grain shift knob, antenna down switch, iPod adapter through head unit, auto dimming mirror, 33% window tint (all around except front windshield) and leather steering wheel skin (wrap) that you have to sew on. It thickens your grip area and feels and looks much better than stock. On the exterior (I have dark metallic green paint with gold pinstripes and gold badges), I upgraded to the XC style egg-crate grill with gold slash and gold outer trim and I have a euro license tag at the front of my car. My wife says my S70 looks like a pimp -mobile! Guess that's about it.

This car is my daily driver and is in-town and interstate for the most part. It is solid and can boost quickly to over-take any car and it's very quick off the line. I've had it up to my speedometer limit of 140mph once and that was enough to show me that I really don't need to mod it any further on the top end. I don't plan to race it on a track. The car will have 160K miles on it by next weekend- time for another oil change and tire rotation (I do these at 5K miles and at the same time) and some lube to the door latches and hinges. At 170K miles I'll flush the transmission fluid again (last done at 135K miles , so I'm sticking to a 35K miles schedule on that.

The '04 V70 2.5T that my wife drives has a few mods but nothing serious. She doesn't want them. The upper strut mount has the QBM reinforcement and we installed IPD swaybars (front and rear) with heavy duty endlinks and there's a K&N drop in filter in the airbox. Other than that, theres' also a euro plate on the front and 33% window tint and we had the dealer add a rear spoiler when we bought the car. That's it. It runs very smoothly with Mobil-1 synthetic in the crank case and Mobil-3309 that I've flushed the tranny with at 45K miles. I'll do it again at 80K miles and then stay on a 35K mile schedule for that. She has almost 60K miles on her. Oil changes and tire rotation are on the same schedule of 5K miles.

Hey MadeInJapan,

Wow..thats alot of modifications. To do all that for a Volvo here in Malaysia, its going to cost a year's salary haha.

Anyway, mine is mostly factory parts. The only changes made so far is an open air filter concept and a boost controller. (with boost gauge of course). Other than that, its pretty standard.

Exterior-wise, have not done anything yet. But the car will be going for a color change next month (badly needs one). It'll be in pearl white and fitted with customed front lips. The wagon windows now has 80% tint and the side windows have 33%. Except the windscreen though. Malaysian authorities will issue a ticket if the windscreen is tinted.

My concept of modifying a car is not to race on tracks too. Its just to teach those pesky little rodents on the roads that this is not a family car..anymore hahaha.

Anyway, it was swell to have a reply from you. Thanks for all your advices and insights.

Cheers,
Han

Hiya Han,

I'm in kl. Would like to know how you're doing with the turbo guage and wot the differences are over stock cars? Was it a good, cheap and effective mod for getting more power out of your baby? :)

Cheers,
Jay
