Removing and installing back door (gate) shocks

Post by trammellclan3 »

I have a 98 V-70 and the rear shocks that hold the door up when you open it are shot. I have purchased the parts and accessed them from the inside of the car but I can't get the old ones to release. Any instruction and hints will be greatly appreciated.

First and foremost, you need someone to help you to hold the gate up while doing this. The best end to "undo" is the end bracket towards the front of the car. (Not the one with the hinge on it...it makes it very difficult to get back together and then you have to re-seal the bracket plate on the outside.)

The ends of the strut should pop out by lightly prying them.

The new ones go back in the same way...

Again, use the forward bracket to adjust for the new strut.

(Probably a good idea to put a bit of grease in each of the ball sockets, as there is very little in the new ones. Mine groaned as though it was grease-free!)

Hope this helps!
