2001 C70 (2.4 cab) Is it the ETM?

Post by Rincewind »

Hi,

The car has done 47,000 miles it is an Auto and I have had it for a couple of months.

Last weekend I had the TPS light on and the code was for the MAF which I have replaced, reset codes and all was OK. This weekend the throttle started being slow to react when lifting off sometimes there is even a slight surge as it gets down to around 1200 rpm. Tickover is generally OK but it definately jumps a little now and then.
The most odd and worrying part is motorway driving, I take my foot of the throttle and the Revs don't die, they come down slowly with the engine breaking but as the car is an auto does that sound correct? Normaly auto's have very little engine braking and the revs tend to drop quite quickly (I think).

I have read that the ETM can also affect an Autobox quite badly needing a replacement, so far no codes, just strange behaviour.

PS. The first time I noticed I was solo but had towed our caravan the day before. Towed the 'van back today and noticed the oddity on the revs, I did wonder initialy if it was the van pushing but I don't think so it was just very slow slowing down.

I have read lots on the ETM but nothing quite matches the symptoms I have, though they are close. Final clue...it is a white label Marelli.

I hope someone can help.

Regards

Keith

It sounds like the throttle body might just be gunked up and need cleaning...try that first and see what happens. Also, there is a software download for the ETM...dealer should do this for you for free.
Good luck and let us know what's up.

H'mm, could be, I used some 10k boost the previous weekend to clean the engine internals, I wonder if that has moved some of the gunge in the system to the throttle body? I will have to take it off next weekend and give it clean.

Thanks

Stage 2, had the ETM off and it was pretty clean, no build up anywhere and the butterfly was springing back quite healthily so it is now re-fitted.

I have got an engine check light up but don't have my laptop to read the codes but it is almost certainly something I have done!!

Thinking about things again I reckon that the revs not dropping may be a red herring, if I put it into neutral they do go down though not to tick over but I wonder if autos do that anyway?

The main issues is this pop up in the revs just before it gets to idle speed, once it has settled into its idle everything appears fine.

Anymore suggestions greatly received, will put the error code up at the weekend.

Regards

Keith

Keith, at your miles it's time to do the spark plugs if they haven't been done yet and it's also time to consider a transmission flush...some excellent write-ups on how to do this in the repair database...make sure and use the right fluid for your car. Anyway, I guess I would try these things (good preventative maintenance anyway) before thinking it's the ETM. If all this doesn't get it or you read your codes and it's the ETS again, definitely I would take it in...have you had the ETM software upgrade (free!) yet?

I haven't had the car very long so i don't know if the software has been upgraded I guess i will need to check with a main dealer.

I will give the plugs a look and probably change, I have been thinking about the gearbox oil, its just the price of the oil that is dissuading me! If i can get the car running well i will probably look at a gearbox cooler fpor the towing duties.

I will let you know what I discover.
