Torx bolt to door-stop snapped off

Post by tailor »

The door-stop bolt has snapped off! :(

I had stopped to look for the cause of the creaking when turning right. It appears to be the shocks. :(

I digress from the real issue, the driver's door-stop torx screw bolt has snapped off , obviously a case of metal fatigue.
It looks like an easy fix.
I think I should be able to drill out the remaining bolt and replace it with a new one. That is if they used a non-diamond type material.
If anyone can shed some pearls of wisdom on this issue I would be grateful.

Yes, you are lucky that the bolt broke rather than the weld on the door piece (which is usually what happens). Drill her out and you should be good to go.

I had to change the door stay on the platinum and the bolt that came with the Scan Tech replacement was not threaded correctly. It wound up ruining the threads in the mount. At the end of the day I wound up using the original bolt but I had to drill out the mount on the A pillar and I then put a nut on the back side.

It would be best if you can get the old bolt out with an easy out but if you can't get it out you can recover by just drilling it out with a slightly oversized bit and add a nut on the back like I did.

Thanks to you both MIJ and Ozark.
I called the stealer-ship for the bolt and would you know, its a special order item and I must pay for it first
Wait for it, the massive sum of $1.44 , this is where some initiative on the part of parts man would have been welcomed.I could have had it tonight if he just ordered the thing.( rules are rules)
So in summation I can only get the bolt tomorrow but I will tackle the extraction tonight .
More to follow!

if the threads are damagedyou can just get a helicoil or similar thread repair kit at just about any auto parts store.

I want to buy a ticket to watch that. I'll bring over a six pack, a lawn chair, and provide encouraging cheers as I watch. :D

Short of taking the fender off and going at it from the back side that just isn't going to happen.

FYI, I did think of that but I decided that I didn't want to take the fender off after I figured out what it would take.

Sorry Lee, you can't watch because I did the repair to my car last year. But you can certainly send me a six pack!
I have no idea why you would want to take off the fender...I was able to do it all right there in the doorway. It seemed very simple and straight forward to me. maybe I was doing it wrong.

If you can elaborate on your procedure it will be appreciated.

I doubt that any of our door checks are different between models and years but I could barely fit the drill in the crevice between the door and the dash panel to drill out the old threads - I sure couldn't get a tap in there and turn it even with the sliding handle tap handle. The sliding handle tap wouldn't even fit the appropriate tap for the original size bolt with my kits.

I would love to helicoil my door and get it closer to "right" but I can't figure out a way to do it.

I always love to learn things.

I remember the OZ repair (where you drill out and use some tape to hold the bolt from the other side on your finger)...did it to our old 850. If I recall correctly, taking the door off made things a lot easier and gave more room. Are we on the same page here?

If you can drill it you can tap it! Chuck the tap up in the drill. use the drill (variable speed and reversable of course) to turn the tap.
