1997 V/S40 Towbar fitting help

Post by -chris- »

Hi guys,

I need fit a towbar to my 1997 1.8 V40 but i am not sure it is a DIY job or not?

Do the simply bolt on to existing holes or would i need to be drilling holes?

also the electrics, i have been advised to use a 'plug in' wiring kit which i have found but when i stripped out the boot to find where it plugs into i didn't see anywhere for it to go..

If anyone has any experience of of fitting a towbar to a v/s40 of this type then any help would be much appreciated!

cheers

I'm trying to look this up for you in my copy of VADIS but I have no record that either a V40 or S40 existed in 1997, at least in the U.S. market (they both begin in 2000). Please verify and post back. If it is a short-coming of my software, I'm sorry and I hope someone else can help you.

Yes mine is a 1997.. I think in the uk they appeared in 1996.

That's a shame! :( thanks for trying though! do you think it will be very different 1997-2000?

Chris,
Let me look again...I'll change the parameters of VADIS to include non-U.S. production and see if it works.

Bingo!
I found the following diagrams for you...looks like a "bolt-on" design. Probably no drilling. Please look at the second diagram especially, as it shows a "fitting kit" (#36) which appears to be a relay of sorts. I have no idea about installation instructions (where the relay goes) but apparently you just pop it into whatever receptacle is made for this (and should be empty or have a blank relay already) and you will have electricity to the back. Sorry I can't help more, as this appears to be all there is. Also, I should add that it appears to be for France/Great Britain markets. Where are you? In the U.S., now I recall that Mitsubishi and Volvo collaborated on these earlier Volvo designs ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_S40 ) so you might have more luck from a Mitsubishi dealer w/ price and fitment. You might also try the http://www.s40concepts.net/newforum/ forum which might offer you more information. Good luck!

For DIY towbars in the UK try http://www.towsure.com. They stock bars, electrics and anything else you need.

All of their towbars are made to fit the manufacturers' fitting points. I have had seven over the years and had no problems with fitting.
