89 245 alternator replacement procedure?

Post by Volvo_240_Atari_2600 »

Hello,

1989 volvo 245
automatic and non turbo with AC

I need to replace my alternator. Never changed one on a volvo before.
Do I need to remove the fan shroud and fan to get to the bolts?

Not sure I comprehend that skinny adjusting bracket.
Any secret to that?

Thanks
Eric

I have never removed the fan shroud to replace the alternator but you may find it easier for the bottom bolts to remove the under-engine tray.
Not sure I comprehend that skinny adjusting bracket.
Any secret to that?
If the bracket has a bolt going down its length it is a positive adjustment screw. Instead of loosening all the bolts and levering the alternator to get the correct tension on the belt, then trying to hold it in place while you tighten the bolts, you loosen the bolts but adjust the tension using the positive adjustment. Once the tension is correct you can tighten the bolts without fear of the alt slipping.
