98 S70 Can't get Key out of Column - Overdrive Button?

Post by peterz »

1998 S70 Auto trans. Son can't get ignition key out of stearing column. Says only thing he's done differently is push down the ovedrive button but says button didn't depress all the way. Don't see how they are related.
He's driven the car and moved the stearing back and forth.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Pete

There is no overdrive button.
There is a "Shiftlock Override" button, though.
It allows you to get the car out of park in the event that
your electric interlock (Hit the brake to get outta park) fails.

Shiftlock release (automatic transmission only)

The gear selector is locked in the (P)ark position. To manually release the shiftlock:

Turn the starting (ignition) key to position I
Press firmly on the "SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE" button located to the right of the base of the gear selector
While holding the override button down, press the button on the front of the gear selector
Move the selector from the ( P )ark position.

His is probably sticky. They tend to attract spilled soda and such.
Wrap something around some channel lock jaws
to prevent scratching the button and pull it straight up.

All should be well! :D

make sure the gear lock button on the shifter it self isn't stuck and depressed. That will cause the key to stay in.

Also make sure your gear shift is all the way into "P" (park) or the key won't come out.

Yup, and make sure the detent latch button on the shifter knob is all the way out...you can usually grab it with thumb and index finger and coax it out and convince it to release your key. If not, disassemble the center console and unhook the shiftlock cable (grey-jacketed cable on the RH side). The fix is to pull the shifter knob out and lube the shifter assembly until the button on top of the metal column pops out freely.

Same problem on a 2000 c70

I had to use the override to push the car out of the garage...then the key stuck in the lock. The override button was still depressed. A little tapping and a pair of pliers and i worked it back out and all is well again

Thanks
