Still fuel system issues with 1992 wagon 740

Post by briguy1960 »

Canadian market 1992 470 wagon with the Regina system.

Problem one. If left for less than around 6 hours its starts first time. If left overnight. It takes several attempts to start. Turns over fine but does not fire. Usually after about for cranks it starts to sputter and after a couple of those it fires right up and runs fine. Again if I restart within a 6 hour period its all good. I'm guessing that I'm losing fuel system pressure and its taking time to build up.

Problem two. Uneven acceleration. In the first few minutes of driving SOMETIMES the car accelerates as it should and other times it balks and sputters. in the 1500 to 2800 rpm range only. This is most noticeable in city driving. And again some days it does not happen at all.

Problem three. Weird highway driveability issues. Usually the first hour is perfect and then I'll get the odd 1/2 second lurch where it feels like it is not firing. Drving up hill around 4-6% grade and at 75 to 95 kmh brings out the worst of this behaviour. If I put the accelerator to the floor the engine happily perks up to 4000 to 4500 rpm and sings a perfect tune. At speeds over 110 kmh it runs almost perfect

Other details.

Brand new fuel pump relay--did not seem to make much a difference although I now hear the "one second after" click when i turn the ignition key and I'm sure I can hear something whirring in the back and I'm pretty sure I could not hear that before.

Brand new plugs and plug wires. position six on the fault reader shows 1-1-1 and again at RPMs above 4K it does not miss a beat.

With the engine at idle,if I pull either of the two fuses assigned to the two fuel pumps the engine dies within seconds.

Originally I thought It was some constriction is fuel delivery but after charging up 1500 metres over a 18 km road at mostly WOT that does not seem likley.

Error codes on input two yielded

2-2-3 and and 1-3-2.

Any advice wold be most appreciated

Well, I learn something new every day. We don't have the Regina system in the UK, or I haven't come across it if we do.

Fuel injection fault code testing is done on output 2 so the two codes you have turned up could possibly be your problem.

1-3-2 is battery voltage too high or too low. This code may have been set if you had difficulty starting and ran the battery down a little.

2-2-3 is Signal missing to or from the Idle Air Control valve.

To check The IAC turn off the ignition and disconnect the ECU connector. Remove the cover from the ECU connector to expose the pin identification numbers. On 740/940 Regina system connect an ohm meter between fuel injection ECU pins 9 and 33. The reading should be 4 ohms. If the reading is not 4 ohms check the wiring and connectors to the IAC.
