Is Oil Change Frequency too long for Turbo engines?

Post by radmangto »

My wife has a late 2005 V70 with the 2.5 Turbo .... it currently has 38K miles on it. She drives a mix of town and open road miles on a daily basis.

Last night I was checking oil on my car and decided to check her's. What I found was on the dipstick near the "full" mark was brown area of what I would call beginning "sludge" buildup  . This was about 1/2" above the oil level on the stick.

I also checked the oil cap where oil is put in the top of the engine. The inside of the cap also had this heavy layer. It was even thicker here. :(

I am concerned with the high temps of the turbo, is this an issue with changing oil on the Volvo recomendations of 7500 mile frequency?

Your help is appreciated in this post ...

5000 miles with SYNTHETIC is much better
You may wanrt to Seafoam your car and change over (to syn) as this is way too early for this to show up.
You WILL have problems later on if left untouched

I agree with JRL on all of his advise here...the good thing about Seafoam is that results are instant. AutoRx, though good, takes much much longer.

In regards to the original question, I agree that 7500 mile oil change intervals are too long. It's as if Volvo wants you to get your car just past the warranty period so they can charge you big bucks for engine work. Same thing goes with their policy that the transmission is a closed unit and never needs to have its fluid replaced.

I change my oil with synthetic (especially in a turbo) at 5000 mile intervals despite what Volvo says...and have been doing this since 5000 miles when I switched our V70 over to Mobil-1.
