Removing Steering Wheel Shroud: 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo

Post by rthom »

What is the trick to removing the steering wheel shroud on a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo? I need to replace a broken turn signal lever. I have removed the 2 visible torx screws from the lower part of the shroud, but it still won't come out. Are there other screws I am not seeing?

Thanks, rthom

There are two other smaller ones - T-10 or T-15 - I can't remember off the top of my head. They are inset deep in the holes that directly in front of the steering wheel. The holes are small and larger sockets tend to get stuck if you use a 1/4" drive socket and an extension with the Torx bit. I have found that a long 1/4" nut driver with the Torx bit works better.

Many thanks, Lee. I could see those two deep holes and wondered if screws were hiding in the bottom. Now it's a trip to the store get a smaller Torx bit. Strange why Volvo wouldn't use the same size for all four screws.

You can barely reach the two [front?] screws with the
Volvo torx-driver [the smaller size] if you use it without the handle.

I was many miles from home when my ignition switch crapped out.

The screw was tight, but I could turn it with a good grip on the insert.

The Volvo torx driver is in the tool kit in the trunk.

Thanks for the input.

I managed to get the two front screws out with a T-15 Torx screwdriver. Not the easiest to locate in the deep slot, but with some patience you can engage the screwdriver.

There was no Torx screwdriver in my toolkit.

You guys are making this harder than it needs to be. T-handle torx drivers are your friend. I think mine are 6" long. Just saying...
