91 740 A/C
Hi everyone, just a quick question: the A/C on my 91 740 works fine (it respond when I turn it on, etc), but it doesn't get COLD! It blows out a sorry excuse for cool air. Any ideas how to lower the temp?

yeah, you need to have the system checked for leaks, chances are you've run out of coolant!!

I agree. You have low freon or your compressor is wearing out. Have someone check your freon levels, etc.

Another possiblity is that it is overcharged. Either way you need to check the actual lowside pressure.

I'm so annoyed. Ever since I retrofitted my A/C to R134a last November, I've had to have the freon recharged every three months or so.. it's still under warranty service, but I still have to pay a small fee for the O-Rings..

When I retrofilled my system with R134a my AC specialist informed me that maybe it will start leaking because the pressaure in the system must be increased compared to the older freon. That is one reason why they sometimes want to change the sealing for the compressor shaft. He also told me that the limits for the working upper and lower pressaure is also mush more narrow for R134a. So, as jimmyb mentioned, it can also be overfilled.

Retrofitted Procedure Performed 10/30/2003 (friday), and the freon leaked out entirely within two days. They replaced a high-pressure hose (coming from compressor) and refuelled at no additional charge. Three months later in February, freon leaked through the same hose, attributed to a defective worksmanship (it was susceptible to engine vibration and eventually worn out).
So naturally, I became agitated when the air conditioning was gone again. I went back to the shop, and this time they tell me the LOW-pressure hose was bad. This was beyond the scope of warranty, so I'd have to pay for the genuine Volvo parts + labor. Even though, I have reason to believe if I wasn't forced to do the conversion, they wouldn't have had to disturb the dryer canister to change a leaking radiator behind the glove box.
The only reason I was forced to undergo this procedure was that Volvo no longer had equipment to deal with R12. In fact, they freely released what was in my old dryer into their garage, defeating the whole purpose of my R134a investment.
Meanwhile, if I had dealt with the radiator at my current father-son Volvo shop, they could've vacuumed and recharged R12, instead of freely releasing it.
The father-son Volvo shop has access to the same genuine parts, and has over 30 years of experience with Volvos. I replaced my low-pressure hose, and even though I had to pay for the freon, the total cost was still less than the genuine Volvo shop. (saved me about USD 60!) My car isn't worth spending that much money on anymore.
