Blower motor noise

Post by Cossack »

Hi
My blower motor is making a whining noise, particularly early in the morning when it is cold. Last time this happened on my 850, it was a tell-tale sign that the motor was about to die.

I found a kit to replace the brushes in the motor - Has anybody ever performed this repair? Does it do the trick? How easy is it?

Thanks for any advice on this

Why do you suspect the brushes? Usually when they go there is no warning whine, the motor just stops.

On my 850 the whine was a dry bearing on the motor shaft. That was over 2 years ago. I pulled the motor out, lightly lubricated the bearing with a silicone based grease and put it back together. It is still whine free.

On the S60 you need to remove, on the passenger side, the sill trim panel, the soundproofing panel, the side panel on the centre console and the glove compartment. Detach the drain hoses from the motor and the filter housing and move them aside. Fold the carpet back from the front edge. Detach the connector to the motor. Remove the 5 screws holding it in place and pull the motor out.

From there you can decide if the brushes need replacing or if the problem is something else.

OK thanks Bill. I'll give that a try first. I'll post an update when I get it done.

I agree with billofdurham, usually whinny motors are caused by dry bearings. The less you run it like that before lubricating it the better chance it can be fixed with oil/grease alone. The whinning is vibration which is really bad for the bearings

Although it may not be possible, if it were me I'd at least look to see if either of the shaft bearings could be reached with some spray lubricant before going to the trouble of taking the motor out.

I have the motor out but I am not sure where to lubricate. The fan wheel cover the top of the motor, so only the trailer bearing at the bottom of the motor is accessible. Any thoughts? :?
