240 dl sedan 1984 Overdrive Doesn't work

Post by cincykid18 »

so my 240 doesn't shift into fourth gear, and while i love listening to the engine howl when i'm going sixty five, i'm curious if there is any way to remedy this problem. i suspect it must be the solenoid? i saw on the ipd site the solenoid over ride kit http://www.ipdusa.com/version.asp?strPa ... &V_ID=4410. has anyone used this

the reason i think it's the solenoid is that the car blows the fuse every time i put one in there, as soon as the ignition is turned the fuse blows. i'm almost positive the rear defrost is not the source of this problem.

thanks for any advice!
Evan

Evan,

do also check your overdrive relay, and the wiring from the shifter button to the transmission as this can sometimes short out.

My understanding is that with car in park in your driveway, have someone listen under the front of the car...as you push the overdrive button on and off, they should also hear it clicking. If they hear the click each time, then the solenoid is good. If they don't hear it, that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad...could be the relay or even the wiring in the shift console that has lost it's connection, thus the ability to click the solenoid. At least this will give you some place to start. Also, if the relay or wiring to the relay is bad, most likely you won't see an arrow go off and on, on the dash when you hit the button.

how do you test the relay
The only way to test a relay is to substitute it with a known good one. Unfortunately none of the other relays in the vehicle can be used for this.
