240DL 1985 STALLS & BATTERY DIES

Post by bruced »

I'm writing on behalf of my Dad. He has a usually reliable 1985 245DL wagon. Recently it has started stalling after every 50 miles or so leaving a brand new battery dead. The battery and the alternator have been tested and both are fine. There is no apparent current drain anywhere. The car has now stalled 3 times roughly every 40-50 miles and each time the battery has needed to be recharged. Does anyone have any ideas?
many thanks
Bruce

When the battery and alternator were checked were they done together with a check made at the battery for the charge it was receiving from the alternator?

All I can suggest is that you check the battery leads to make sure they are tight enough. Also pay special attention to the point where the negative lead fastens to the frame. There is also an earth (ground) strap between the engine/gearbox and the frame which needs to be checked for good, clean connections. Any problems in these areas would lead to poor charging.
