940 turbo 1992 intermittent power loss

Post by kidbopblues »

Hi
Something weird happened to my 940. Drove home fine. Next day started, but had little power. limped it to the gas station, added gas. about 1 mile of driving and it ran better. Drove about 20 mile and got weird again, Added a few more gallons of gas and it worked okay for a while and did the same thing. Fuel pump relay is okay. But- could this be one of the fuel pumps?
Also-just before that, the heater motor fan stopped working, worked again for a day or two and quit. I have no idea if these two areas share any electrical systems or if it simply a coincident. Any one got any ideas? Thanks!! By the way-the car will run. but not with gusto!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The heater fan and the fuel pumps do not share any electrical systems.

You certainly could be experiencing fuel pump problems or it may be something much simpler like a blocked fuel filter. How long is it since that was replaced? It should be done every 60,000 miles.

On your car, to simplify diagnosis, there is an on-board diagnostic unit beside the left strut tower. You can use this to see if any fault codes have been set by the control unit.

Thanks Bill.
The problem appears to be solved for now! after reading another thread, I checked the air intake filter box and it had some maple tree whirlygigs in it!-so I took it apart the tube leading to what must be an air metering device- and it was full of debris!. I am not sure how it got there. So one lesson learned-trouble shoot before making the parts guys rich...
