ticking sound on volvo 850 se non turbo and other problem

Post by breezewind »

Hello all, i just found this website. I am from Australia, nice to meet you all.

Ok, I have a problem with my beloved car. I can hear tick tick tick sound when the engine is running. Before it used to be a come and go thing but it has been 1 week and I can always hear the engine ticking. I only drive about 8 min to work and i was thinking maybe the car has not been warmed up enough.

Question:
1. What may cause the ticking sound? I hope it is not bad. The car is not loosing power or anything like that. I just had it serviced like 3 weeks ago. The ticking sound happened after the service. I took it to a workshop that claims to be a volvo and european specialist.

2. Sometime when the car is stoped stationary (like on traffic light) and when I start to accelerate from 0, i feel like the car is loosing power for like 1 second then start to take off as normal. So when I depress accelerator pedal, it doesnt go instantly, this happens twice or once a day. Any idea?

Thank you very much for your replies.

Welcome to the forum!

You said you had the car serviced? The ticking is likely the lifters not pumping up due to a change in the viscosity of the oil.

What weight oil did they put in there? Should have been a 10/30 w. full syn. and an oil filter equippped with a drain back valve.

Always spend the extra dollar or 2 on a good filter. The cheaper filters are not made very well. If you ever cut one open you will see what I am talking about.

If your engine is warmed up and it is still ticking and you oil level is correct than That wouldn't likely be the problem.
I would check your timing belt to make sure it is not fraying. It it is and it breaks, you can ruin your engine.
