Scanners and Vadis

Post by tailor »

I would like some help with regard to scanners and Vadis.
The idea is to try and make the diagnostic reading and resetting of codes a little less cumbersome.
I had a look at the Autoxray AX6000 , it appears to do everything including making you expresso in the morning,
 but at 399.99 for the AX6000 it seems a little steep for a weekend mechanics pocket.

My current vehicle is 94 850 TurboWagon, OBD1 and I have the OBD11 port as well, I tried an OBD11(only) scanner without success.I got an error code so I have to assume that the vehicle is not OBD11 ready. I am not sure if the Equus 3120 Innova Diagnostic Code Scanner with Freeze Frame Data for OBDI and OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles would work, any thoughts on this ?

At 150.00 it is a good price at this point and might be the easiest route to follow.
My wife drives an Envoy 2002 so I could also use it for that vehicle as well. At some point I would like to upgrade to a newer model( car that is  ) for myself and hand my wagon to the children. I have enjoyed working on the Volvo and would stay with Volvo.

The other route:
I have Vadis discs and wonder what I would require as far as cables and extra software if i installed Vadis on a Mac or PC laptop. I am not sure if funtionability is dependant on the version of the software. Will I have any functionability, for example, able to read and or reset codes and what they would encompass ?

As always a big thanks to those who respond.

VADIS is designed to work through a box called the VCT2000. They are no longer available directly from Volvo and they are scarce in the used market. I think the last one I saw on eBay went for around $3,000. Without the VCT2000 box VADIS is really only good for looking up part numbers and procedures.

Thank you Ozark. The VCT2000 sounds like the Atari game box, I am sure that it would not work with this application

So rule out the VCT2000.
How about the other scanner anyone!

Not only that, but you must remember that the VCT2000 is useless for reading codes on pre-"networked" Volvos ('98 model year and prior). For those non-networked cars, you need a VST (Volvo Systems Tester) or the replacement, an Autodiagnos Multi-Tester Pro.

Or you can buy a "DICE DIAGNOSTIC UNIT" for US$1400, which only works with vehicles 1999 and newer :?.

If somebody has $1 billion to spend then you can buy the whole Volvo from Ford.

So to summerise:
No VCT2000.
No $I billion to buy Volvo from Ford.
Stay with the diagnostic boxes of OBD1 until I get a newer younger addition of Volvo and then look at what else is out there.

The situation sort feels like I am looking at my late fathers 8MM film and trying to work out how to get it onto DVD. I have the projector, I have the DVD, now how to get them to talk to one another. Btw this is not a question!!
The joys of progress.
Thanks to all who contributed.

+1 for this! I have a '98 S70 and can use a scanner but it doesn't scan all of my Volvo codes. I've often wanted that diagnostic box under the hood (which they did away with) in order to read all of my codes and reset them. Consider yourself lucky...no more $$ to spend and you can reset everything there.
