I've owned Girdie for about 10 years now and until this year have only preformed routine maintanance (oil /belts).
Buttttt... after this summer's excursions to the local "pick it and stick it"(where i found a set of the thick IPD sways) I convinced my self to invest a little in trying to keep her, as opposed to buying that "R" i had my eyes on.. Right now finances aint working out..and after seeing all the 240's in this yard plus finding a nice copy of the Bently for a deal, i decided to get dirty and keep Girdie..
My black leather interior is immaculate(small dash cracks) and I recently just spent a whole weekend customizing the rear deck, ie custom mounted 6x9's, while retaining "Volvo Sound" covers. So the inside is prty minty...
I had a drip leak in my my trans cooling line, (changing radiator we didn't undo/loosen bottom mounting clip and when we disconnected the line from the rad, the movement creased the line at the mount..), so after reading the Bentley we decided to fix the line, easy job, frustrating but easy,
" oh just undo this line and that one", but what a "B'" to get those lines started(HINT:crows feet and extensions).
We also dropped pan , changed gaskets, filter, filled with new fluids.
Put her on the ground and away i went, prty smooth. No shift problems.
Later that day I checked the fluids, she was a bit low, barely reg on the dipstick, so i added a quart, shortly rafter this quart i started to have a weird low pitched whir/whine coming from what seemed front of trans, and it seemed my shift points were higher, instead of say 2500 rpm it would get to like 3000k then shift. Top gear would seem like it had a "limiter" , I could go say 60 mph and press the gas only to find louder "whir/ drone" , only small increases in MPH, hardly any increase in RPM. After driving for say half an hour the problem went away.
The changing of the fluids did do a couple things.
-No longer thunks so hard with gear shifts. Small thunk but i think it is motor mounts, square trans mount is looking ok).
- Before, when I would place the car in gear at a stop(P>D) it wouldn't move much, now it feels as if the gas is slightly depressed, it pulls..
- When I used to shift into third from fourth using OD button the car could break nicely.( I use the OD as a downshift when coming down hills too fast- ( when i got to say 35-30mph i would hit it all the while watching my tach.is this OK btw?)
Now the car goes into third and but it takes a while for speed to decrease. (2 sec as opposed to instantley) and it's sooo smooth, before it used to "grab and throw you, like a jet pilot hitting airbreaks, now it's just like a strong steady decelerate. Not so reliable a a break anymore?
So i'm thinkin :
1.with all the cleaning I did under there the solenoid must have gotten wet/ partially disconnected. Switch is clicking/light goes on. Seems like shift point is still high though.?? Kick down cable maybe??ECU?
2. the last quart i put in was Valvoline high milage, no sealers, they didnt have any more Mobil 1 and didnt want to drive it low. Maybe they weren't mixing well yet, it has been cold here in Cali.
I have heard what everyone says about flushing old trannys and just hope we didnt do more harm than good. . We didnt get into any valves so what is worst we could have done? Please dont say torque converter and please dont be a wise acre and say "ruined tranny".
This is alot for one post so I'll save my groaning problem for another thread. thank guys.
