940 intermittent problem

Post by clay roby »

My 940 Volvo (160K) is a great car and I have always managed to troubleshoot and repair anything that has needed attention..........until now. The car stall out without warning but not every day. It seemed like a fuel problem so I replaced the fuel pump (Regina System) and the fuel relay. All seemed well for a month or so and the problem returned. I checked all the wiring connections and wiring bundles and made sure the computer ground was good All seemed well for a month or so, problem returned with increased frequency. I had already replaced the rotor, cap and plugs not long ago but didn't replace the wires. Seems more likely to occur when the engine is cold, also seems to stall occassionally when turning (which I why I originally suspected the fuel pump). I really don't want to take my car to the (ugh) dealer to have them spend 5 hours to trouble shoot the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply...........I have had other Volvo's ( 240s and 740s) and when the air mass meter failed, it was not intermittent. Is it your experience that it is different on the 940? Clay

Have you checked for fault codes? Your car has the On Board Diagnostic unit in the engine compartment. No code reader needed.

Thanks Bill. I am not familiar with the On Board Diagnostic unit. Can you point me to a reference that I can read?

This applies to your car as well. Some codes may be different but if you find one not listed post for help.

Bill.
