Key Fob Switchblade Mod

Post by StarmanDXE »

My car only came with one key (the lady lost the other one...) and my dad believes it would be smart to have a 2nd somewhere just in case I lose mine.

That said, I just checked and saw that those flip-keys have the same FCC ID as my keyfob. Would I be able to get one of those instead of a fob and a key? (Just get a new blade cut that matches my old one.) Or is the transponder bit in just the key different than the transponder bit in the flip-key?

Also, any idea what dealer programming costs?

Thanks!

Thank you for that. Didn't realize it was so thoroughly worked out already!

So, I called the dealer out at school to see what they would want for it all (since we already had some decent estimates from the local dealer) and they said $60 for the key, two (2) $39 software downloads, and an hour of labor at $75 per hour (on top of the ~$20 used keyfob) 250 f-ing dollars?! What the hell?! :( That's just not kosher...

So... I guess I'll just get the stealership to do just the flip-key. Then I can buy a $20 flip fob and do the circuit board switch and have a working flip key and just an extra normal key...

Thanks for your help!

I just called the dealer around here (Doylestown, PA) and they said that they keep the keyblanks on hand and they run $30 and they cut them for another $5! (Plus $30 for the software and $60 for labor... )

You can also look for a flip key on eBay...sometimes you get lucky and find one uncut. Or, message the guy over on S.S....he seems to get some of these in stock sometimes and will probably be glad to sell you one at a discount. However, your dealer's prices might be about as good as they get...I don't know.
