HELP! V70 Turbo AWD 1998 Cylinder Head

Post by cosmicdust »

Hoping some helpful info may come my way...

My '98 V70 lost compression in #5 cylinder, or so the mechanic tells me. It's been to two mechanics, one regular and one import specialist (not the dealer yet).

I'm being told it's a burnt valve. For this, I need a used or reman head. A a reman head is $1300, plus about 1,000 for labor. BUT for a few hundred less they can swap out the engine (140K) for one with 90K.

Now, I used to be fairly mechanically inclined, but this is way beyond my level of expertise.

Does any of this sound odd, or is it not abnormal?

What questions should I be asking?

Please help!

Thanks so much.

I have not yet had to use them but this company in Clearwater Florida has a lot of positive comments in the forums:

http://www.cylinder-heads.com/

If you are a Vet they will give an additional discount.

Sorry but Justins $400 dollar heads just isnt that good. I mean, if you have ONE burnt valve it's so easy to get a used valve and lap it in.

A local machine shop should be able to do this for under $400! easy and that includes valve stem seals, and milling the head.

It could be doing my own work I'm kinda divorced from the real world, but I'd sure be wondering what I was getting in a 1300$ head + labor. That must include a full timing belt kit and maybe new head bolts ,gasket kit etc. ? binglax09 is right a good machine shop should be able do it cheaper as long as nothing else is wrong when you get it apart. Good to see binglax09 posting again somewhere. Your advice has been very helpful in my learning about Volvos
