My struts and shocks are shot, but I am concerned that the ride will still not be compliant enough for me when replaced. The other option is to go to the 215/55 X 16 tires and downsize the wheels. Has anybody compared the ride of the two wheel sizes?

Choosing a tire that gives a smooth ride is also the tire that prevents bending those 17" rims in the various potholes we have here. So I opted for 215/50/17 and am satisfied with the result. You may want to try 215/55/17, to equal the oversize tires you have. Don't go to 16s. Use that money to buy a new set of shocks that are NOT heavy duty.

Along these lines of tire selection,
I have an 06 S60 in need of four new tires. Any suggestions
on a smooth riding tire. Does it make any difference which brand of tire you choose? Any suggestions.

Continental-GENERAL tires have value in their R/T as well as their Altimax lines. High treadwear ratings are made of harder rubber! I run my tires from 30-33 psi. Thirty in pothole season an thirty three for some performance later on....

Yes, some brands I have seen include a rubber compound designed to take shocks, although that was for a passenger tire size, not a sport tire (see tirerack.com). Also, there can be major differences in road noise when different treads are used. It is usually a tradeoff between grip and road noise; performance vs. ride.Marcus Moore wrote:Does it make any difference which brand of tire you choose?

Smoothest tire you will find is the Conti Extreme Contact and they're inexpensive
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

The tire I was reading about before were the GoodYear Assurance ComforTred, but it only fits 16 inch volvo wheels.
For 235/45-17, Bridgestone Turanza Serenity advertises a good ride, but the most expensive I've seen. I see the Continental ContiProContact advertise a good ride at a reasonable price. Other "good ride" tires advertised are Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum, Goodyear Eagle, and Michelin Pilot HX MXM4. I noticed while driving in rain with my Pirelli P6 Four Season tires that the car tended to hydroplane, so I would look at that rating next.
With my previous cars I have always found Michelin to be the best tire for me, but they are expensive.

Bridgestone Turanza Serenity: We put these on our V70 and love them! I put the General Altimax on my S70 and they are really great, less expensive tires- drove through a ton of snow this past weekend and they fared well in that too (even though they're an all season tire).

Continental currently has a "Buy 4 tires, get a $75 MIR" (in the form of a Visa gift card) promotion going on. I think Continental ExtremeContact tires are in my near future...
