2000 T-6 electrical "short"??

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 T-6 electrical "short"??

Post by wolfspiritky »

I started noticing my lights dimming when I let off the throttle. Now it has advanced to the point that "sometimes" when the lights dim I also get a pop/crack in the speakers, also the noise "sometimes" happens when I turn the ignition off. There have been a few occasions when it damn near die when accelerating from a stop. I noticed while driving tonight that the lights just randomly dim at all speeds and rpm's.

It seems to be worse when I use my turn signals or dimmer switch. Radio almost always cracks when I switch to or from my high beams. A short in my switch or in the column in general????

I originally thought a bad diode in the alternator or bad voltage regulator. I've had the charging system tested and was told it was fine. If my memory serves me right, this started happening shortly after I replace my battery.....just a coincidence?? A bad ground some where??

Need to figure this out before something gets seriously screwed!!

Check the battery to make sure that the connections are clean and tight. Be sure the plastic cover is in place to insulate the connections from the holddown bracket. There are three ground points by the fender in the engine compartment near the coolant tank that you can check for cleanliness and tightness also.

Well did all that and seems to have solved the problem :D !!!!

Actually, there are SIX ground point, the three you mentioned by the coolant tang and three more on the drivers side near the power distribution box.

All the ground points are like the old GM side post battery terminals. There are four small "nipples" that contact the terminal. When I cleaned them I just shaved them down to allow "full" contact.

Thanks for the help. I thought it could possibly be a ground issue but didn't even know where to begin looking for the major ground points!!!
