99 S80 T6 Another Tranny gone Bad

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 S80 T6 Another Tranny gone Bad

Post by stratman3 »

I just bought the car last thursday, as is no warranty, the price was right 1900.00 to be exact. Today I noticed a power steering kinda noise, exept the ps was full. Well went to The Volvo Store in Orlando Fl. they did a recall etm thing to it and then gave me the bad news that the tranny was bad. After reading several postings here it seems to be a common problem with the S80s. I'm defenetly getting the tranny rebuilt but not by Volvo, 4000.00 sounds pretty steep to me specially after finding out that GM built those. After calling a few local shops, the price ranges from 850.00 all the way up to 2000.00. Does the price range seem right? compared to the hefty dealer price. I figure I'm still doing good considering I got the car at a low price. Any suggestions and comments welcome. By the way I still got my 95 850 Turbo good old faithfull.

Yeah, price is in range. Did you call Cech Brothers (also in Winter Park)? I trust those guys implicitly.

Are you sure the tranny is bad? How does the car drive?

It was driving fine till today. It went in to neutral or limp mode while I was going at 50mph. It drives normal when it's cold.

Did The Volvo Store pull any transmission codes when the car was in? They should be listed on your work order (they should be in the format TCM-XXXX).

This seems suspect to me to. Before I plunked down any buck for a transmission rebuild, I would get another qualified opionion.
How the car operates fine under one condition and not under another is just...making me think there is a sensor bad.

I will go ahead and change the tranny fluid and filter myself just to see if it improves. That power steering like noise, in my opinion sound like fluid flow is restricted. What do you guys think? Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks everyone for the input. Changing the tranny fluid and filter was a sucsessfull the tranny shifts like a dream. I was little afraid at first about the damage being already done, but after several test drives, there is no sings that there was ever a problem. The first thing I noticed was when I turned on the car the whinnning or powersteering like noise was gone. Again thanks everybody.

Forgot to mention. The whole thing only cost less that 30.00 bucks. Beats 4000.00 that The Volvo Store in Winter Park wante to charge me.
