Has anyone ever changed an oil filter on a 2008 S80 3.2?
If so, are there any suggestions on how to do it?
Is there a special Volvo tool used on the nut on the filter cover?
I have changed the oil filter before on my 2002 S80 and thought, well this is a little different, but no problem, I'll
figure it out and I did.
The oil filter on the 2008 S80 has me stumped. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The filter is the same as on all P2 cars ('01 and newer V70's, etc.). The filter wrench you want to get is this one: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/volvo- ... cessories/
This thing is over $60 at the dealer. Other than that, buy your filters from an online store like www.fcpgroton.com or eeuroparts.com. You'll need some aluminum washers for your oil pan nut...
Basically it can't be hard...After you've driven for awhile to get the oil more then just warm, drive the car up on ramps...you may have a plastic cover over the bottom of your engine (some do, some don't)...take it loose if you have one, drain your oil and undo the oil filler cap on top of the engine- then tighten oil pan plug enough to compress the washer...then move your catch pan over to under the oil filter housing and take the cover loose with your oil filter wrench- about a quart of oil will drain out there. Take the new filter and rubber 0-ring that comes with it...take the old 0-ring off of the oil filter and put the new one on...insert filter into the cover (upside down) and fill with oil- almost a quart...then tighten it back on the oil filter housing-... just get it snug with your filter wrench. Next, take oil and fill through the top of the engine (you'll have to check your owner's manual to know exact amount)...don't quite put all that is suppose to go in into your engine (and remember you put about a quart in the oil filter housing)... Tighten the oil filler cap, start your car and check for leaks- back car off of ramps...let it idle for a minute or two, kill your engine and wait 5 minutes to check your oil level. Top off as needed.
Pretty much the same procedure for all of my Volvo's- I have an oil change down to about 10 minutes on these cars now.

Thanks MIJ,
That is a perfect description for my 2002 S80 oil filter change, including the tool,
but this 2008 S80 has a completely different configuration
for the oil filter. Compared to all the oil filters I have changed over the years including ones on my 850, my two S70s, and my 2002 S80, this oil filter is inverted and mounted high in the engine compartment.
Thanks for the reply and I am certain all the information will be helpful to all those changing oil filters on S80s older than the 2008.
( The ignition is different than anything I have seen on a car, so I should have expected some surprises)

vfr, unfortunately I don't have any software that shows your model year (my VADIS only goes up to '05) but I came to the conclusion that all was the same from searching out the filter for an '08 S80 and it showed the same as earlier years- maybe they are wrong (eBay and such). Anyway, you might go to the dealer and just tell them that you are planning to do all of your own maintenance and would like to know how it is done... they might be nice enough to tell you. If they do, at least buy the first filter from them.
Sorry that my information wasn't for your model.
Regards,
MIJ

Hi,
I was shopping for an 2009 S80 3.2 also and it appears similar to another car I once had (the other brand from Sweden). I believe the S80 2008 and 2009 engine are similar.
The car I owned had a plastic cap with a groove that retained an o-ring. The cap was black plastic and had a large hex projecting up from the top surface. I used a large adjustable wrench (very limited room to move wrench - because it was long) on this hex projection to loosen this cap at oil change time after I drained the oil. Lift cap off after unthreading it and a filter cartridge is now visible.
Remove old cartridge and install new one, replace o-ring was advised so I did, and I lubed the new o-ring with motor oil and replace cap. Remember it is plastic, be sure it is threaded correctly and then tighten carefully.
Be sure the drain bolt in back in and comfortably tight. Put in new oil. Start engine and check for any oil leaks. I let the engine run for 3-5 minutes while looking for leaks and was ready to stop the engine should any leaks be observed. None were.
I found later that a special tool does exist to remove the cap. It had a 32mm hex and used a 3/8 drive ratchet. This tool exists as there is no where near enough room to a use a standard socket and ratchet. A wrench that size is long and there was very little room to move it, so it is slow going.
I believe the s80 6 cyl in 2008 would have a very similar procedure. Not sure if there is a special tool for the S80 6cyl.
Hope the concept was helpful.

My 07 is quite a bit different than my 2000. Instead of underneath the car the filter is accessed from the top of the engine, passenger side, near the front by the dip stick, just under the power steering fluid resevoir. The PS resevoir slides vertically out of the mount. Under it you'll see the filter housing cap. I have a very large 36mm socket for struts that fit it perfectly. Unscrew it, replace filter, screw it back on.
