1992 Volvo 740 Wagon (2.3 liter engine w/o turbo)

Post by Margie85 »

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and am hopeful someone can help with an answer to the below question. I appreciate all answers and advice.

My dad is trying to replace the timing belt on his 1992 Volvo 740 wagon. In order to take the timing belt cover off, he needs to take off the crank shaft and it won't come off. Here is the question he would like answered:

Is the bolt that holds the pulley to the crank shaft a right-hand thread or a left-hand thread?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

This is a conventional right hand thread. However, they are very hard to move, as he has probably found out because they should be torqued to 60N-m (45 ft-lb) plus an additional 60 degrees (1/6 turn).

He needs to lock the crankshaft in some way. The best way is to buy or hire a locking tool. IPDUSA have such a creature at:
http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-700/Tools/C ... 0-723-553/. One other way, that I have used in the past, is to jam the flywheel ring gear with a screwdriver and remove the bolt whilst an eager assistant (you?) holds the screwdriver.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Bill.
