Car dies when A/C is turned on

I am having problems with my Volvo, I tried to charge the AC but before I even got started the vehicle shut off when i turned the AC on max. I didn't have this problem before I started the charging process but now I can't even turn the ac on without the car duying.

2002 volvo V70 XC
2.4 TURBO

Welcome to MVS.
This isn't an A/C issue...seems more electrical. Check your leads from your battery as well as your ground wires for corrosion or loose contacts. Do you have any other unusual electrical symptoms?

Is the compressor locked up?

Not necessarily. I had a Buick that locked up its A/C compressor and there was no squealing (and this was a torquey 3.8L pushrod V6)--the engine would just die; shocked the heck out of both me and my mechanic.

okay, then I stand corrected...I suppose you could pull the serpentine belt off and see if the compressor turns by hand- it should.
