Busted shock or something worse?
Busted shock or something worse?
When driving over deep potholes (I live in NYC so there's lots of 'em) I hear a clanking noise coming from my right front wheel and I get what seems like excessive vibrations in the steering wheel. I recently replaced a bunch of parts in the front end (shock mounts & bushings, tie rods, ball joint and sway bar links) so the only thing that I can think of that needs to be replaced is the shocks (when I had the front end work done the guy at the shop said the shocks were OK). It's a '98 S70 with 84K miles and I assume it has the original shocks on it. However when I test the shocks by pushing down the front right wheel the car doesn't bounce at all. Could the problem still be the shocks or something else? Thx

I have found that when the shocks go bad, they just clang and clunk without the usual boing motion. Your description sounds like shocks and or upper shock mounts. By 60k, the front struts on my 96 854t5 were toast, upper shock mounts too.
For new shocks, Bilstein is a very good choice.
