Bill, I wrote before concerning a bumpy feeling in the steering wheel when I turned it. Well, it went away. The problem only developed after I had disconnected the tie rod end from the steering arm. My theory is: the car was on a lift for about a week with one tie rod disconnected at the steering arm and hanging. Air that had been in the cover of the tie rod for years was forced out by oil flowing from the rack into the cover. The air worked itself into the piping to the the pump. With air in the lines I was getting intermittent pressure from the pump. When the air finally rose to the top of the resevior, the problem went away.
Any other thoughts on what might have been causing it?

That sounds like a very feasible explanation and one I hadn't considered. In effect using the car has bled the steering.
