XC70 2001 Transmission shifting weird

Post by anast »

car has 86,000 miles, I've had it since 76,000. Recently it started having a harsh and clunking shift, up and down, from 2nd to 3rd (I think) at slower speeds, like around town driving. In the last couple of days it will sometimes feel like a 2-3 second space before it goes into either 3rd or 4th (upsift). fluid is full, don't know if it has ever been replaced. I'm concerned that it is the tranny going bad??

Welcome to MVS. They say to not ever touch these transmissions but the dealer is dead wrong- especially on your model year, the tranny is a weak link and needs to be flushed. At your miles, there is nothing wrong with flushing it. Follow the directions here- https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 1650#31650 Be aware that the description for the P2 cars applies to your car. Also, if your car hasn't had the latest transmission software upgrade done, including the removal of the stop-neutral function, have it done. All of these things may restore your transmission's function...and well worth the extra effort.

Thanks for the imput and I will be flushing the system and see what happens. I have a couple of the other "transmission" posts and "tranny selinoids (sp?), were mentioned. What do these selinoids operate or activate, are they located inside the tranny or on the housing, and would heat cause them to act up, but work okay when cold?

I will be doing my flush this next week and have access to both the Mobil-3099 (?) and Mobil 1 synthetic. Is one perferable over the other?

On the XC70 (2000 and newer) you have to use #3309. Using the other (Mobil-1 Synthetic) will mess your transmission up.

Thank you, I'll use the #3309.
