V70 T5 2002 Sputters when starting cold

Post by pjtoy »

2002 V70 T5 (Turbo) sputters and bucks when started cold after sitting overnight. Acts like it is running on 3 cylinders. Smooths out after a few minutes and runs fine for the rest of the day. 90,000 mi. Just changed the plugs as I figured bad plugs were the problem. Didn't help. Also if placed in gear, power brakes have little boost until the engine setteles out.
Any ideas what is causing this?

Welcome to MVS.
Do you get any trouble codes from the OBD-II socket?
These will help us pinpoint things more easily.

Sounds like maybe the water temp sensor is bad.

No warning signals, should I invest in a code reader?
Actually, (wife's car) it starts OK but sputters for about 1 minute when put in gear - then smooths out.

You should be able to go to Advance Auto, Pep Boys or Autozone and have them read the codes for you.
