S60 A/C 1 side blowing out colder air then other
I have an 01 S60 T5, I noticed this problem last year, now that the weather is warming up again in the north east I noticed it again. When I have the A/C on, the 2 drivers side vents blow out cold air and the two passenger side vent blow out air noticeably warmer. I'm thinking that maybe a door of some sort on the ventilation system is sticking open and it is drawing air for the passenger side from the outside. It is just a guess so any suggestions would be appreciated. Just to be clear it seems like the A/C system is working fine and the air coming out of the drivers side is cold like it should be, so I don't think it is a problem with the compressor or leaking refrigerant. Thanks Mike.

There might something stuck behind the damper holding it closed. Beyond that, I think there are 2 possibilities: The CCM (computer, expensive to replace) is bad, or; you might have a faulty temperature damper motor. You can take your car to Pep Boys, Auto Zone, or Advance Auto Parts and ask them to read the fault codes on the car. This might help to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Here are directions on how to replace the damper motor if you want to give it a try. It doesn't look like it would be very hard. I saw one price on the motor of $161. Also, you can try http://www.myswedishparts.com, http://www.tascafordparts.com (also sells Volvo parts), or Darrell Waltrip Volvo (800-689-0021, ask for Jamie or Don and tell them Matthew's Volvo Site sent you for a discount), or your local dealer; make sure you have your VIN # because 2 different motors were used on this model year. Before you order a new motor, you could remove the old one and make sure that the damper is moving properly. If you install a new motor yourself you will have to take your car into a dealer to have the motor limits set using their special software program, VIDA. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I had much the same problem with my 2002 XC V70 and finally gave and took it to the dealer. It turned out to be low on refrigerant! I had looked at all the more complex issues and it brought back to me how important it is to start simple. The frustrating part is that I checked it with one of the simple gauges that you get with the R134a kits and it had checked out. That was the most expensive charge I've had.
