'87 740 wagon starts and dies---fuel pump(s)?

Post by ccb222 »

'87 740 wagon starts, idles for a few minutes then dies. I can pump furiously on the accelerator to keep it going when it first falters, but it eventually dies anyway. I suspect the in-tank fuel pump. I have replaced the in-tank fuel filter which was "solid". I also replaced the external fuel filter, hoping for the inexpensive fix, but the problem persists. Back to the in-tank pump----Previous posts seem to support this. HOWEVER, I'm wondering about other possible causes; fuel pressure regulator, for example, which I know nothing about. Comments, or specific posts to read?? Thanks. Charles
