Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
I am attempting to replace the alternator but I have a hard time figuring out how to get the belt off. I see the wheel that controls the belt tension but
I do not see any tension controllers.
Any advice is appreciated!

The tensioner looks like an idler wheel and, at least on my 850s it is directly next to and slightly below the alternator. It takes an odd sized (3/4" give or take) square socket to release the tension or others have just used a small pry bar. It does have a hole in a dog ear to lock it in the released position once you get it released to make putting the belt back on easier.
I have a tool that I bought from IPD but here is what you are looking for.

MadeInJapan made a nifty tool with plumbing parts from the hardware store.
the tensioner for your serpentine belt is just about directly to the left of the alternator, there is a nut right in the center of it, I don't remember what size, 12 or 13 mm I think, put a wrench on it and turn it clockwise as far as it will go to remove the tension (if you can't see the nut, it may still have a plastic cover on it that you can pry off with a screw driver)
