It'd be due for a new transmission pretty soon if it hasn't had one already.
Does good care offset big miles? I can't answer that, because there is no one answer. Did you have it checked out by a mechanic?

If it checks out my a mechanic and price reflects mileage, keep this in mind...volvo's are built to last... you may get twice the mileage if you keep it in good shape too. Paul

Mine's a 97 855 turbo AWD and it has 230 000 km. I bought it last spring and it's the first time I own a car with so many clicks. Even though I had to put dollars and time to keep the kilometers counting... I won't go back to cheaper but newer cars!
I love the thrill of pressing down on that gas pedal and hearing that distinctive sound. I appreciate the looks the connaisseurs give me when we meet on the street. I love it when my car-loving friends want me to open the hood to take a look at quality. And you can't beat the comfort and security I feel when I see my wife, 3 kids, and my big black labrador leave the house.
You have to keep an eye on maintenance and prepare an emergency cu$hion for surprises, but I fully trust the heart of this machine. I hope to give it to my eldest daughter as her first car when she turns 16 (she just turned 9 last weekend!). Or maybe she'll think it's an old man's car, and I'll try to find her a nice 300 000km convertible... and keep the ol' 850 for a couple of more years!

72,000miles here. If you need bulletproof reliability*, get a Japanese car. If you want power, comfort and safety get the Volvo.
*that's not to say that many Volvos don't reach 250k miles, or outlive Asian cars

167000 km and counting. I drive my car to and from work each day. average speed of 130-140kmp. No prob. It seems like the faster you go with these (850 glt), the better they run. I can seem myself replacing brakes, tires, tie rods and that but the engine seems very strong.

112K miles (182000km) and no issues with the engine. Trans dropped at 90K miles, replaced with new trans.
It will be passed to my daughter this December.
Last weekend I test drove a S80 - it had a knock in the transmission when accelerating
. Tried the S60 and was not impressed with the interior compared to my 850 standard - the turbo appealed to my basic instincts but the car looked and felt cheap.

216,000 after a 2 week 5,000 Kilometer trip. Melbourne - Canberra - Batemans Bay - Sydney - Coffs Harbour - Bribane - Noosa - Gold Coast - Ballina - Grafton - Pokolbin (Hunter Valley)- Goulburn - Melbourne.
Never missed a beat. Just under 9 litres per 100 Klm. Next May we go to Perth. Going well.
