98 S70 Best adhesives/glues for door panels and door seals?

Post by C@lvin »

What is the best type of glue to put the two pieces of door panel back together (the volvo eco friendly glue has completely let go). Many of the plastic brackets that hold the stays that snap the panel to the door have come loose also. What do you recommend? Any need to clean off the old glue or prep the surfaces in any way?

I have another problem with the seal around one rear door frame coming loose at the top and sagging - not the seal on the door itself, but the one around the edge of the body frame. Any recommendation for that?

Thanks,
Calvin

Do you mean the the rubber strip? I used 3M adhesive and worked for me

I dont know what exactly that is since my 850 doesn't have glued panels (just falling apart panels).
The glue I used to fix my dash is Loctite's Professional Heavt Duty Epoxy (5min), from Home Depot. It seems to hold everything together well, at least better than the "plastic weld".

I used 3M Black Super Weatherstrip Adhesive on the rubber moldings on my 1993 850 weather stripping. I did this over two years ago and they have not budged since. I did clean the area well first though. I think some alcohol on paper towel works best to clean the area prior to applying adhesives.

Thanks guys for the 3M recommendation for the weather strip/rubber strip/rubber molding that fits on the car body around the door opening and seals against the door when it closes. That's a great link, Al.
I dont know what exactly that is since my 850 doesn't have glued panels (just falling apart panels).
You know when you unsnap or snap the five or six little plastic holders that anchor the panel to the door? Those little plastic holders are inserted into plastic brackets that are glued into the inside of the panel. And the plastic holders can slide in and out of the plastic brackets in case you need to replace them. I'm pretty sure it'd be that way on your 850 too.

The panel itself on the S70 consists of two pieces that are kind of like fiber board that are glued together.
The glue I used to fix my dash is Loctite's Professional Heavt Duty Epoxy (5min), from Home Depot. It seems to hold everything together well, at least better than the "plastic weld".
So what kind of materials will the epoxy effectively mate? Will it hold the two "fiber board" panels together well? And will it adhere the plastic brackets to the "fiber board" on the back side the door panel?

Thanks again!

"Most plastics, metal, glass, stone...etc", I found a bit tricky using that epoxy on ABS, which has to be cleaned by paint prep and sandpapered. I did use fiberglass cloth to repair dash, it turns out great, the fiberglass resin melted the fiberglass with the ABS formed a very strong layer. But if the repair area is very small I dont see how it would work. GL!
