245 motor mounts without hoist?

Post by myspv »

I badly need to replace the passenger side (exhaust side) motor mount on a 1987 245 and do not have access to a hoist. Is this possible, er safe?
I have only replaced the transmission mount on this car before and that was a piece of cake. There were massive oil leaks previously, and I have replaced the front-end engine seals, but the oil leak has severely deteriorated the motor mount. It is squishy and the engine clearly leans to the side. This also makes oil filter changes very difficult! :)
Thanks all...

Nevermind. I ended up buying a hoist this morning.
If any board members in/around Philly want to borrow it for a day I'm sure I'd be fine with that for a case of beer or so...

Got it done.
Wow, that was a huge pain in the ass. The old motor mount was so swollen it was nearly impossible to get a wrench on the bolt to the motor-side bracket nearest to the alternator bracket.
After my last post I did find this: http://volvo2.homestead.com/240mount.html
The bolt that I refer to is labeled as #1 in the picture on the above webpage. I also did not move the alternator out of the way.
This guy uses a floor jack and a block of wood wedged into the lip of the oil pan to raise the motor. I was concerned about the jack slipping, and I had the hoist anyway so I went that route.
Anyway, the driveability of the car is much better now. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer.

Apologies for no replies on this but I have been away for two weeks. There are plans for a home made hoist which have been posted on the site.

Thank you for updating your posts as this always helps others.
