It sounds as though I am being followed by a small engine plane.
I assume my car's rear wheel bearings are going.
If this is the case, how long can it go on like this?
How much does this repair typically cost from a private volvo mechanic?
We just poured thousands into this darn car and I will not have cash for a big job until the end August.
Thanks,
Jen

Don't assume it's your rear bearings.
You have an AWD vehicle and the drive shaft to the rear could be the issue- best to get it checked sooner than later. If it is the drive shaft, it can be disconnected (but you'll have a 2WD vehicle then).

You might also take a hard look at your tires. I deal with this daily (as a VW/Audi tech). Some tire are naturally noisey and get worse with wear. Scallopped or feathered tires can make some unbelievable road noise too.
