Hi folks...new to the board. I couldn't find a search feature and didn't see this issue adrressed...so here goes.
I need instructions on how to replace the tailgate lifts.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The search feature is at the top right of the page but this hasn't been covered for the 740. Search under the 850 section for a write-up on that model.
I don't have the full instructions for replacing the tailgate struts for the 740 but it should be fairly easy to do. You may need to remove some of the interior trim to expose the ends of the struts. Once you can see them you need either a strong assistant or a piece of strong wood long enough to hold up the tailgate as you change the struts one at a time.
The struts have a cup on both ends which fit over a ball. There is also a wire clip which goes through the cup and hooks over to stop the cup sliding off the ball. Remove the clip and use a large screwdriver or bar to pop the cup off the ball. To fit the new strut squeeze the cup onto the ball using adjustable pliers.
Bill.
