Short *Skreetch* on wheel turning on INCREASED elevation....

Post by Raleigh »

Hi everyone! Car: 1989 Volvo 740GLE 16 Valve. Before I go on I'll add that it's as 172,000 miles, overall great shape, and I'm about the bite the brakes bullet and get new rotors, calipers, and pads for the front.

What's happening is that when I turn off the road onto any entrance that's got a little elevation to it, I hear a short but prominent skreetch on the first wheel to hit the elevation. (Right turn, I hear it on the right side, now same on the left.) Any ideas? I'm hoping this isn't anything too bad, but I need to throw it out there and see, or else pay the consequences later! Thanks ahead of time!

This is one I haven't heard of before but my first thought was wheel bearing. If you are replacing the rotors (discs in the UK) you will be well placed to check the bearings.

Out of curiosity, why are you changing the calipers? Are they leaking or sticking?

Yeah, when I changed out the wheels for the set from my '94 850 and added wheel spacers (so they would fit) we noticed that the rotors were really ground down and the calipers were just about to go - now they're sticking fairly regularly and pull when I turn or break hard. Are wheel bearings easy to replace? I have a little extra cash right now so I'm anxious to do some good replacement work to get the 20 year old brick up to snuff.

Wheel bearings are fairly easy on the 740 but first check to see if they do need replacing as this was my first thought on reading your post not a definitive answer.

You may have provided the answer in your last post:
added wheel spacers (so they would fit)
It is possible that the tyres are rubbing on the underside of the wheel arch. Check that first, bearing in mind that you will have to simulate the increased elevation if you are doing a static test.

To check the wheel bearings jack up the front wheels in turn, get hold of the tyre at 12 & 6 o'clock positions then push and pull on the tyre. Any back and forward movement of the wheel is an indication of worn bearings.

I think you're right, Bill. I think it was the spacers... however I guess I didn't notice any more or less space between the tire and the car than before... I'll have to check that out again. Thanks!
