V 70 XC 2000 issues with engine check light

Post by heavydinsc »

The engine check light on my 2000 V 70 XC has been going off recently. This has been happening at the same time that the Traction Control light, Brake light and the ABS lights are on. Yesterday, the speedometer went to zero all of a sudden as I was traveling along at 30 mph. Now, all the lights are off, but the Engine Check light remains on. When this initially happened last week, I had a mechanic look into it. He ran a diagnostic on all the codes and then cleared them. His assumption is that the ABS control module is faulty. Has anyone had a similar experience, and is the car at risk if I continue to drive with the Engine Check light on?

hey!! i had exactly the same problem u mentioned. Mine is a XC70 cross country 2004 with 52000miles. i also made some known mechanic other than a volvo service center to check for the problem, he concluded that it was a faulty ABS module, then i took it to a volvo service center to see if they concluded the same but they come up with that the problem is a Faulty On board computer that now has to be replaced. they said that all the lights on the dash are erroneus and that the ABS is working fine, that is virtuosly impossible that the ABS module Brokes that easily because the car is not that old and the mileage is not that much. The mileage counter same as u had gone dead. There is no problem if u dont have the ABS working, u´ll still have good breaking performace but if it is the ABS module don´t let much time pass before u replace it ABS is important for wet road, and sudden breaking because it improves handling and manuevering throu that situation. now im trying to find a good deal on a on board computer for my car so if u know where can i great deal on it over the states plis reply to your post. I live in Ecuador ( south america) spare parts for volvo hear can cost up to double than in the States!!

Diego,
Thanks for the feedback and the confirmation. For the past few days, my engine check light has been on, and occasionally the Brake light and the ABS light. I'm going to remove the ABS module and ship it to one of the recommended rebuild companies. I'm not sure if they can assist you with your problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check. The one I have in mind is www.modulemaster.com in Idaho here in the U.S. You can call them at 888-892-0764.
Best of luck.
